OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW: Australia’s new visa lottery scheme.

Excited to win Australia’s new lottery?  A new law has been proposed that will allow 3000 foreign workers to the country. This law was inspired by the green card system in the United States in which winners are given a pathway to citizenship.

This will allow people aged 18 to 45 from across the Pacific to apply for the scheme in the hopes of being randomly selected to apply for permanent residency. The two-step requirement of this scheme mandate that those who succeed at the first stage obtain employment in Australia and comply with the health, character, and basic English requirements before arriving.

The proposed bill will be presented to the federal parliament on Thursday, according to Pat Conroy, the minister for international development and the pacific, with a pledge to strengthen communities in Australia with strong connections to the region.

“This is the first time that we’ve allocated part of our permanent migration allocation to a specific region – and it is revolutionary,” he said.

“The reason we’re doing it is a desire to build the people-to-people links with the Pacific, and one of the best ways of doing that is building our Pacific diaspora.”
